Point of Sales systems (POS) are systems that take record of transactions at the location of check out. In it's most basic form a POS systems allows the employee to enter information and take payment form the consumer, thus completing a transaction, and printing a receipt. But point of sales systems can be very complicated depending on the industry. Some basic equipment that may be incorporated with a complete POS system may include a computer, monitor, cash register, printer, some display for the consumer, a bar-code reader, and some sort of debit and or credit card reader.
POS systems are also integrated in calculating critical information to increasing sales. For example, how much of a specific item is sold during a specific time of day, the effectiveness of a sales promotion or amount of use of a coupon. The possibilities become near endless especially as advancement in technology are made.
