Promotional Sales can target consumers directly, and retailers, and or even sales staff at the retailer. Those promos aimed directly at the consumer are appropriately called consumer sales promotions, while the promos targeting retailers and staff are called trade sales promotions.

Often times the use of coupons, samples, rebates, and contest to name a few, are used to drum up more than average interest in a product or service. This is in hopes of gaining more immediate sales by adding incentive and value.
